Prayer Information

City Academy is a diverse school that welcomes students from all cultures and backgrounds. We are happy to announce that the daily Zuhr and Jumma prayers have now resumed at lunch times. We are the only school in Bristol that have bespoke washing facilities for our Muslim students to prepare for their prayers. We are fortunate that Imam Rizwaan comes to school every day to lead the prayers. Washing facilities are opened at 1pm by the Imam and students are then escorted to E116. Prayer mats will be provided by the school will be washed on a regular basis. We advise students to bring in a hand towel. Please contact Azmina or Hinda if you have any further questions.

Family Support

Staff across the academy undertake extensive professional development to strengthen their understanding of the experiences of refugees and asylum seekers. This includes whole‑school CPD led by Ruth Pickersgill, City Academy Bristol’s lead school councillor, and Homa Banaei, an expert from the Schools of Sanctuary network. In addition, staff receive annual training in trauma‑informed practice, anti‑racism, equality, diversity and inclusion—ensuring the academy is a place where belonging is prioritised for all students. Learners also explore themes of migration, displacement and identity through a rich and carefully planned curriculum. In Religious Studies, History, and Geography, students encounter real stories of displacement—from historical figures such as Moses and the Prophet Muhammad, to contemporary global migration movements. In PSHE, learners deepen their understanding of compassion and inclusion through topics such as Refugee Week, breaking down stereotypes, identity, privilege, heritage and allyship. These learning opportunities help challenge myths, build empathy and develop students as thoughtful, responsible global citizens.

City Academy Bristol ensures that every new arrival is welcomed with dignity and care. The school’s dedicated multilingual family support team plays a crucial role in supporting newly arrived students, including those seeking sanctuary. The EAL Stars programme provides regular wellbeing check‑ins, personalised language learning and a trusted space for students to share their experiences when they feel ready. Staff recognise that trust takes time, and the school is committed to supporting each young person at their own pace. Celebrating diversity is a central part of school life. The academy marks Black History Month, Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month, Refugee Week and other important events that highlight the strength and contributions of diverse communities.

A particularly proud moment for the school was when a Ukrainian EAL student performed their original poem “I Come From” at a Schools of Sanctuary event hosted by the Lord Mayor of Bristol—an inspiring example of student voice, creativity and courage. Becoming a School of Sanctuary reflects City Academy Bristol’s ongoing dedication to building a community rooted in kindness, respect and welcome. The academy is committed to continuing this journey, strengthening its support for young people seeking safety, and working alongside families, partners and the wider sanctuary network to make Bristol a city where everyone can belong.

Family Hubs

What are Family Hubs?

Family Hubs offer information, advice and help to all families in Bristol. They run activities and support you and your family to access services and information both at our Family Hub centres and online.

This means you only need to go to one place for information, professionals will work together to give you advice and you only need to explain what you need help with once.

Who can use Family Hubs?

Everybody is welcome at a Family Hub. You can use Family Hubs if you live in Bristol and you’re expecting a baby, a family with children aged from 0 to 19 or a family with a child or young person aged up to 25 with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
