City Academy students experience the magic of Shakespeare at Bristol Old Vic

Twenty-five students from Year 7 and Year 11 at City Academy recently had the unforgettable experience of attending a captivating production of Romeo and Juliet at the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre.

Everything that makes Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy so well-loved was brought to life on stage. The deep-rooted family feud, the intense and forbidden passion, and the devastating violence that propels the young lovers toward their tragic fate.

This production remained true to Shakespeare’s original text, preserving the poetic beauty of his language. However, it also introduced an innovative twist – rap. Infused with elements of rap, soul, and R&B, the performance seamlessly blended modern and classical storytelling.

Students were treated to a dynamic mix of Elizabethan verse alongside contemporary spoken word, making Shakespeare’s timeless themes even more accessible and engaging for today’s young audiences.

A spokesperson for City Academy said: “This was an incredible opportunity for our students to witness Shakespeare performed in a way that resonated with them.

“The addition of rap and modern musical influences made the story feel fresh and relevant, while still honouring the beauty of Shakespeare’s language.

“It was an enriching experience that deepened their appreciation for theatre and literature.”
