City Academy welcomes original Matilda Star

City Academy was proud and honoured to host actor Josie Griffiths, who played the original Matilda in Tim Minchin’s celebrated stage production.
Based on the world-famous book by Roald Dahl, Minchin’s production first premiered at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon before transferring to London’s West End, where it achieved critical and commercial success.
During her visit, Josie led a lively and fun-filled Q&A session with students, sharing insights into her experience performing in such an iconic role.
The event concluded with students showcasing their talents through performances of The Naughty and School Song from the Academy’s own production of Matilda, as well as Hammer.
City Academy extends sincere thanks to school councillor Ruth Pickersgill for organising this memorable opportunity for students.
Rebecca Pearce, Teacher of Drama, said: “Having Josie Griffiths visit City Academy was an incredible experience for our students. Hearing first-hand about her journey as the original Matilda brought the production to life in a whole new way, and her enthusiasm truly inspired our young performers.”
